Danger! | Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury caused by brake fluid coming into contact with skin and eyes. | Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid.
2 | Remove wheel brake cylinder and brake shoes
3 | Detach tie rod (7) from upright to be removed
| |||
4 | Take off brake carrier plate (8) | Remove cotter pin and knock out mounting bolt. Installation: Replace cotter pin.
5 | Remove steering arm (9) | Check the steering arm for cracks or bending. If necessary, insert steering arm.
6 | Remove lubricating nipple (11), adapter and brake line bracket | Installation: Grease upright using suitable lubricant at both positions.
7 | Remove caps (10) with sealing ring from kingpin | The caps are secured using Seeger circlip rings.

10 | Remove steering knuckle, adjusting washer (arrow) and thrust bearing | Installation: Install pressure bearing and adjusting disk together firstly between the axle beam end underside and the upright, and center with the aid of a suitable punch. Then:
Check end play of steering knuckle and adjust if necessary
| |||
| |||
11 | Press out bearing bushings of steering knuckle
| Checking | ||
| The diameter of the individual components must always lie below the same normal or repair stage. If a component's diameter is outside a normal or a repair stage compared with other components, then the component - if permissible - must be post-worked or replaced. | ||
12 | Inspect steering knuckle | It is not permitted in any way to re-work the steering knuckle.
13 | Install bushings into upright | Always use new bearing bushings.
14 | Measure outside diameter of kingpin | Note the measured value.
15 | Measure inner diameter of the bearing bushings in the steering knuckle | Compare the measured dimension with the outside diameter of the kingpin. If necessary: Widen the bearing bushings by reaming to a dimension which is within the same standard or repair size as the dimension of the steering knuckle pin.
16 | Measure the inside diameter of the kingpin bore in the front axle beam | Compare the measured dimension with the diameter of the kingpin. If necessary: Ream the kingpin bore in the axle beam end to a size that lies in the same normal or repair stage as that for the steering knuckle pin.
17 | Check pressure bearing | If the pressure bearing exhibits signs of damage or traces of wear, it has to be replaced. If the kingpin is replaced, a new pressure bearing must be installed that matches the diameter of the kingpin.
18 | Install in the reverse order |
