Remove/install

Remove washer fluid reservoir

 On models fitted with windshield washer fluid heater 

Drain coolant and detach coolant hoses to windshield washer fluid reservoir

Remove front bumper.

Remove intercooler

 Engine 668.940/942

Engine 668.941: a connection pipe is fitted instead of charge air cooler.

Remove retaining clamps (12) at radiator

Remove air intake scoop (13) and detach air intake line (15) at front end cross member (14)

Detach steering coupling (6) at steering shaft (5), take off thrust piece (7)


 Installation: Replace the self-locking collar nut (9) or the nut bracket (16).

 On vehicles with right-hand drive the steering coupling is detached directly from the steering rack, and can only be reinstalled in one position

Detach front rubber hanger at exhaust

Detach alternator bracket and starter wiring harness at oil pan

Prepare front axle carrier removal fixture (10)

 Risk of tipping during later lowering - observe adapter assignment. From model refinement package 03/2001 or VIN "WDB1680311J568590" Adapter adaptation required.

Align front axle carrier removal fixture (10) at front axle carrier (1) and put in place evenly

 Risk of tipping during later lowering.

Take off strut (3) on left and right at front axle carrier (1) and at underfloor



Take off wheelhousing liners on left and right at underfloor and fold down

 Provides access to rear Torx bolts (2)

Unscrew Torx screws (2) on both sides


 Installation: First fit all the Torx screws (2), then tighten.

Carefully lower front axle carrier (1) with engine

 On models fitted with air conditioning, the fixture for the air conditioning line at the right rear of the front axle carrier must also be taken off.

 Lower a maximum of 80 mm.

Pay attention to coolant hoses, air conditioning hoses and electric cables

 Installation: Guides (arrows) on the front-axle carrier (1) must be inserted into the holes in the longitudinal member.

Pay attention to guides at radiator. Pay attention to coolant hoses, air conditioning hoses and electric cables
