Modification notes
22.10.04 | Torque for Bolt for front axle carrier to body changed from 110 Nm to 130 Nm.
16.6.05 | Disconnect steering coupling modified | Step 5 |
| Remove/install | ||
Danger! | Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. | Align vehicle between columns of vehicle lift and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer.
| Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts | ||
1 | Secure vehicle on the lifting platform | Position arms of lifting platform such that fender liners (11) in front fenders can be removed.
2 | Remove air filter housing
3 | Turn steering gear to center position
4 | Fix steering wheel in position using the retainer. | The steering wheel must not be turned when the steering coupling is detached, otherwise the clock spring contact will be destroyed.
| |||
5 | Remove the bolt (4) from the steering coupling (3) and separate the steering coupling (3) | Disconnect if steering coupling (3) is not corroded.
| |||
Grease | |||
Just disconnect a corroded steering coupling (3) for left-hand drive vehicles up to chassis end number 160000 (with model 169) or chassis end number 008500 (with model 245).
| |||
| |||
Body jig saw | |||
Wet/dry vacuum cleaner
Grease | |||
6.1 | Replace steering gear | Only if steering shaft has been cut open because of a corroded steering coupling (3).
7 | Unclip wiring harness (5) on the clip (7) and remove clip (6) with side cutting pliers | If the clip (6) is not removed properly, the cover of the torque sensor board can get damaged. This can lead to ingress of moisture that can cause the steering system to break down.
8 | Unclip vacuum line regeneration (8) and fuel line (9) out of the retaining clip (10) on the firewall
9 | Secure radiator | ||
| |||
10.1 | Remove front bumper. | On model 169.0/3
11 | Remove lower engine compartment paneling | With code (484) Rough road package
Without code (484) Rough road package
12 | Remove sheet metal screw (14) and plastic nuts (12) from fender liner (11)
13 | Pull out clip (13) from fender liner (11) and fold away fender liner (11) downwards
14 | Unhook exhaust system (17) from rubber mounts (15, 16) | Place rags between the rear axle stabilizer bar and the exhaust system (17).
15 | Detach ground line (19) at oil pan (18)
16 | Remove bolt (20) from the motor suspension lug and release retaining clip (21) on the oil pan (18)
17.1 | Unclip hydraulic clutch line (22) from the transmission retaining clip (23) and from the firewall retaining clip (24) | Only if transmission 716.5 is fitted Do not pull the hydraulic clutch line (22) out of the clutch slave cylinder.
18 | Set support fixture (2) at front axle carrier (1)
Engine support device, engine hoist
19 | Remove bolts (26, 27) and replace bolts (26) by retaining bolts (28) | Installation: First fit all bolts (26, 27), then tighten.
| |||
| |||
20 | Carefully lower front axle carrier (1) with engine | Lower a maximum of 80 mm. When lowering check for unobstructed movement of coolant hoses, air-conditioning lines and electric lines, in order to avoid causing any damage.
Installation: Pay attention to the guides at the radiator.
