Check/correct oil level on retarder

Risk of injury when touching the hot retarder and burns caused by hot retarder oil. Risk of eye or skin injury caused by high pressure oil jets from the retarder

Perform services only with the retarder disconnected. When working on the hot retarder, use gloves, protective clothing and goggles.

Place the vehicle horizontally

 Only check the retarder oil level with oil temperature above 60 °C.

Set engine tuning actuating lever and continuous brake to position "0"

Switch off the ignition

Clean around the oil outlet plug (1), the closing plug (2) and the supply plug nozzle (6)

Remove the oil outlet plug (1)

 Collect the drained oil in a clean container.

Remove the closing plug (2)

 In case of high pressure, oil may leak through the threaded plug (2).

Install the adapter (3) with O-ring



Install in-house connector pipe (4) to the adapter (3)

 Only if the tire gauge (5) cannot be connected directly to the adapter (3).



Connect the tire gauge (5) onto the connector pipe (4) or adapter (3)

Apply short bursts of air to the retarder with the tire gauge (5)

 Repeat the procedure until only an oil haze comes through the oil outlet plug (1).

Measure the volume of discharged oil and determine the amount of oil

 The amount of oil removed should be from 5.4 to 5.6 liters.

If the amount of oil removed is <5.4 liters:



The retarder housing has a leak or the O-ring between the gearbox and the retarder is permeable.

 Check the retarder housing for visible tightness/permeability.

 Check the gearbox oil level.

If the amount of leaked oil is >5,6 liters:



The O-ring between the gearbox and the retarder is permeable.

 Check the gearbox oil level.

Remove the tire gauge (5) from connector pipe (4) and adapter (3)

Remove the oil supply nozzle plug (6)

Install the oil outlet plug (1)

 Replace the O-ring and grease lightly.

Install the closing plug (2)

 Replace the O-ring and grease lightly.

Slowly fill the required supply amount

 For correct air discharge from the retarder system, the oil should be filled slowly for at least 3 minutes.



Install the oil supply nozzle plug (6)

 Replace the O-ring and grease lightly.

Start the engine and actuate the retarder at braking level 2 or 3 and, after that, turn off the engine
