The retarder is a hydrodynamic permanent brake in which the flow energy of a fluid is used to brake a vehicle.
In principle the design corresponds to that of a torque converter. The stator (1) is secured against twisting with dowel pins with respect to the rotor housing and stator frame. The rotor (2) is connected to the drive train.
The retarder drive or transfer of braking torque takes place via a pair of gears in the transmission. As a result of the transmission ratio the retarder achieves high braking torques even down to low rpm ranges.
The retarder is actuated via the engine control/permanent brake operating lever (S2) and the retarder electronics. The braking torque is regulated depending on the vehicle load, the transmission output speed, as well as the retarder oil temperature and coolant temperature.
The braking torque of the retarder is also retained when the transmission is shifted.
The retarder when switched on does not secure the parked vehicle.
The retarder switches off at a vehicle speed below 8 km/h.
The retarder is switched on again when a vehicle speed of 13 km/h is exceeded.
