Brake tuning

The brake is equipped with an automatic tuning device free from wear to keep a constant slack between the pads and the brake disc.

Every time the brake is actuated, the lever (9) incorporates a follow-up pin (10) that moves along. The pin fits into an axial groove in the transmission sleeve (16), making the slack between the pin and the groove to match the brake total slack. After the wear of the brake disc or pad (22 and 23) and overrunning the established slack between active components, the pin movement will be greater than the groove width, rotating the transmission sleeve. This transmission sleeve rotation is transfered to the passive sleeve (17), through the wrap-around spring that actuates as a one-way clutch.

The passive sleeve (17), that incorporates a torque limiting tapered gear, is pressed against the tuning nut (14), through the pressure spring (19) and the washer (18), rotating the tuning nut. The tuning nut rotation (14) on the adjusting screw (13) fixed in the deviation board (12) promotes the displacement due to the threading action to the outside.

If the brake pads contact the brake disc and the brake lever (9) rotates even more, the cohesive friction between the nut (14) and the adjusting screw (13) will exceed the transmissible adjusting moment applied to the adjusting nut (14), through the passive sleeve (17) limited torque precharge

This way the passive sleeve (17) will slide in relation to the adjusting nut (14), preventing the adjusting screw (13) to unscrew towards the brake disc.

The actuation stroke under charge will not be taken into account, in the adjusting process, so that the adjusting mechanism dependent on the strength, will prevent excessive adjusting and consequent locking of the brake.

After releasing the brake, all internal components are pushed back by the pressure spring (11), returning the brake lever (9) to its original position. The pin (12) will rotate the transmission sleeve (16) against the adjusting direction so that, in that direction, the one-way clutch and all other adjusting elements are excluded from the rotating movement.

If the slack increased as a result of brake pads wear, it should be compensated by the brake actuation.

The manual adjusting and compensation can also be performed through the adjusting mechanism. The adjusting screw can be retracted rotating the adjusting nut (14) hexagonal element. The opening that gives access to the hexagonal element is located in the back of the brake, being protected by a plug (8).

Total slack is 0.6 - 0.9 mm.
