Buffing marks from polishing painted surfaces

Uneven movement (tilting) of the polishing machine's lambskin polishing disk may cause buffer swirls. Such marks may degrade the vehicle's overall appearance since they become visible on the paintwork as semicircular streaks (arrow 1) if (and only if) painted surfaces are exposed to direct sunlight or round-shaped artificial light sources.
Do not polish surfaces in direct sunlight or while they are still warm (e.g. engine hood). Thoroughly shake polish or gloss preserver cans before use. Frequently replace non-woven polishing cloth with new one to facilitate polishing and obtain optimum results (e.g. replace polishing cloth 4 to 5 times for polishing an engine hood).

1

Thoroughly wash and dry all affected areas or parts.

Remove any paintwork contamination with the appropriate MB cleaning agent (e.g. tar remover, insect remover). Be sure to observe the materials handling and processing instructions shown on the respective containers.

2

Cover unpainted detachable parts, e.g. door handles.

Polishing material residues cannot be completely removed.
This may lead to light-colored staining.

3

With the polishing machine (speed-adjustable), a Moltopren disk and MB paint cleaner deep-clean the entire part.

4

With the polishing machine (speed-adjustable), a Moltopren disk and MB fine polishing paste polish the entire part.

The MB fine polishing paste (MB-Feinpolierpaste) should only be used on severely scratched paintwork surfaces. Generally a lambskin polishing disk is not to be used.
Polishing without polishing material with the lambskin polishing disk can already lead to buffer swirls.

Move the polishing machine across the areas to be polished applying light pressure (the polishing machine's own weight is sufficient); be sure not to tilt the machine. Remove any polishing residues with a wet sponge and wipe the surface dry.

5

Replace soiled Moltopren disk and buff entire surface with MB polish using a machine.

Use a separate Moltopren disk for every polishing material (polishing paste, polish).
Otherwise the polishing result will be insufficient.

Buff until the desired luster is achieved.

6

Clean the polished surface with a damp polishing cloth.

A bright, milky coating will develop on the paintwork after a short drying period (5 to 15 minutes, depending on weather conditions).

7

Rub the cleaned surface with a clean woven or non-woven polishing cloth until the paintwork is clear and bright.

8

Buff entire surface by hand with MB polish and a compact polishing sponge in the longitudinal direction (not in circles).

The polishing residues can be removed with a damp polishing cloth.

9

After a short drying period, rub off the milky coating with a clean woven or non-woven polishing cloth until the paintwork is clear and bright.

10

Retreat polished surface with MB gloss preserver (thin closed film).

As soon as the MB gloss preserver has dried (white film), rub off with a clean non-woven polishing cloth until the paintwork is clear and bright. This maintains the achieved luster and protects the paintwork against premature weathering.
