 If the vehicle is equipped with the easy entry and exit feature, this will have to be deactivated first Otherwise, the driver seat (with model 171) and steering wheel move to a different position when the driver door is opened or closed. If the  holding device is installed, the upper frame is damaged when the steering wheel is adjusted.

Turn steering wheel to central position (front wheels in straight ahead position) and secure with the retaining device

 On a disengaged steering coupling (25) the steering wheel should not be turned because the spiral contact coil will be destroyed.

Open engine hood

Unclip electrical line of O2 probe or oxygen sensor from line bracket (1) and remove screw (2a)

Raise vehicle with vehicle lift

Remove lower bottom sections of soundproofing

Remove bolts (2b) and remove heat shield (2) downwards

Unscrew bolt (25a)



Pull the lower steering shaft (80a) upward to extract it from the steering coupling (25.)

 Do not use force (hammer blows, excessive leverage) as otherwise the lower steering shaft (80a) will be damaged. The lower steering shaft (80a) is sensitive to force exposure from the side.

 Installation: Rotate the rack-and-pinion steering into the center position.

 Installation: Insert lower steering shaft (80a) fully into the steering coupling (25); pay attention to the studs of the steering coupling (25) and groove of the lower steering shaft (arrows).

Detach the locking plate (25f) from the steering coupling (25), while doing so use a suitable tool to lift up the retaining tab

 The locking plate (25f) is not available as a replacement part.

Installation: Insert a new self-locking nut in the existing locking plate (25f). Push on the locking plate (25f) until the retaining tab latches into the steering coupling (25).

Pull boot (3) out of firewall and remove from lower steering shaft (80a)

 Installation: Grease boot (3) on the steering column tube in the area of the sealing surface and insert. Ensure that the continuous groove guarantees correct sealing.
