Risk of injury caused by performing testing or repair work on airbag or emergency tensioning retractor units.

Store airbag units with deployment side facing up; do not expose to temperatures greater than 100 °C. When working on these units, disconnect the power supply.

Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts

Position steering wheel horizontal (front wheels in straight-ahead position)

 On a disengaged steering coupling (25) the steering wheel should not be turned because the spiral contact coil will be destroyed.

Unscrew bolt (25a) of steering coupling (25) at lower steering shaft (80a)



Insert a suitable tool into hole in steering coupling (25) and pull lower steering shaft (80a) together with locking plate (25f) upward out of steering coupling (25)

 Do not counterhold at the rubber boot (85a) or at the plastic temperature protection disk for the lower steering shaft (80a). Do not use force (hammer blows, strong lever action) because the lower steering shaft (80a) is sensitive to lateral dynamic force and can be damaged.

 Installation: Replace locking plate (25f) with self-locking nut.

Turn rack-and-pinion steering to center position.

 Push lower steering shaft (80a) all the way into steering coupling (25), observing the pins of the steering coupling (25) and groove of the lower steering shaft (80a).

Detach exhaust shield near lower steering shaft (80a)

Pry rubber boot (85a) out of body and take off

 Installation: Pay attention to correct installation of rubber boot (85a).

Remove steering wheel

Model 230 except model 230.479 up to 28.1.08, model 230 as of 29.1.08, model 230 with code 809 model year 2009

Remove steering column tube switch module (34)

Refer to Remove steering column tube module.

Mark steering column with respect to steering column tube (71) (arrow)

Remove instrument cluster

Unclip connector (a) from steering column tube (71)

Remove cover below left of dashboard

Disconnect fore/aft motor connector (M20x1) and height adjustment up/down motor connector (M20x2) from steering column

Detach reinforcement brace (98)

 Installation: The steering column must be extended all the way out while the bolts are being tightened.



Unscrew lower bolt (91b) of electric steering column adjustment (80) on body



Unscrew upper bolts (91a) holding electrical steering column adjustment (80) to the body

 Installation: Fit bolts (91a, 91b) and nuts (the steering column tube (71) must remain movable). Start by tightening the upper bolts (91a).



Remove steering column tube (71) with lower steering shaft (80a)

 Do not use force (hammer blows, strong lever action) because the lower steering shaft (80a) is sensitive to lateral dynamic force and can be damaged.

 Installation: Pay attention to the marking applied (arrow) for straightahead of the steering column tube and steering column.

 Installation: If the lower steering shaft (80a) and upper steering shaft (80b) have been separated, observe the markings (arrows) when assembling.
