Remove/install steering shaft

Remove/install

 Danger!

Risk of injury caused by performing testing or repair work on airbag or emergency tensioning retractor units.

Store airbag unit with deployment face up, do not subject to temperatures above
100 °C. When working on these units, disconnect the power supply.

Disconnect ground cable from battery

Turn steering gear to center position and engage ignition lock

The position of the steering gear must not be altered again for the entire duration of the work procedure

Remove central electric unit

Remove steering wheel

Except code SA5, Driver airbag.

Remove clock spring contact

With code SA5, Driver airbag or code BB3, Electronic Stability Program (ESP).

 Unscrew retaining bolts just enough to be able to remove the clock spring contact. Do not twist or disassemble the clock spring contact.

Remove steering angle sensor

With code BB3, Electronic Stability Program (ESP).

Remove combination switch

Detach spring for brake pedal from steering column

Unscrew fitted bolt (1) on universal joint (2)



 Installation: Install universal joint on drive shaft.

Undo bolts (3) on steering column bracket



Press steering shaft with universal joint (2) off steering gear drive shaft

Pull steering shaft out of rubber grommet at floor of vehicle

Installation: Check rubber grommet is correctly seated

Install in the reverse order

Set time on instrument cluster

Except for code J19/ J28, tachograph.

Set time on timer for auxiliary heater

On vehicle with preselector timer for auxiliary heater.

Perform quick test
