 Danger!

Risk of injury caused by touching hot retarder and by scalding from hot retarder oil. Risk of injury to skin or eyes caused by retarder oil escaping under high pressure

Do not carry out any work unless retarder is switched off. Wear suitable protective clothing and safety glasses when working on the hot retarder.

Switch off ignition

 The vehicle must be horizontal and the retarder oil must be at operating temperature for checking the oil level.

Detach the engine compartment paneling under the transmission

Drain oil from retarder

Remove screw plug for pressure regulating valve (4) with sealing ring (3)

 On the version with integral plastic sealing ring the pressure regulating valve screw plug (4) must be replaced if the plastic sealing ring is damaged. Replace the copper sealing ring on the version with copper sealing ring.

Remove pressure regulator valve (1)

 Installation: Replace O-ring (2) and coat with Vaseline.

 Screw on impact extractor  with thread adapter (shop made). Use the impact extractor  to knock the pressure regulating valve (1) completely out of the retarder housing.

Check pressure regulating valve (1)

 Check sieve in pressure regulating valve (1) for damage, and replace pressure regulating valve (1) if necessary.

Install in the reverse order

Check/correct retarder oil level

Conduct a road test

 Bleed retarder:

- If present and possible:

Switch off retarder foot control.

-Drive vehicle at 50 km/h.

- Switch on retarder in first brake
stage 5

times in succession for approx. 5 s each time.
