Remove cylinder head (87)

Remove camshafts

Place cylinder head (87) onto assembly board (24)

 Place correct side of insert (25) into assembly board (24) with the direction of travel arrow (26) facing forward. Screw cylinder head (87) to assembly board (24) with a cylinder head bolt (23) at the front and rear with the front of the cylinder head pointing towards travel direction arrow (26).



Bolt on support bridge (2) with slide (7)

 Bolt support bridge (2) onto camshaft bearings 1+5 and 6+10, use collar bolts for camshaft bearing caps for this step.



Remove hydraulic valve clearance compensation elements (3)

Attach lever compression tool (9) with thrust piece (5) into the sliding piece (7) and align

 Position thrust piece (5) vertically at the upper valve spring retainer (15) and align parallel to slide piece (7).

Fix thrust piece (5) in place with screw (8) to prevent it turning.



Remove upper valve spring retainer (15) and valve springs (17)

 Press together valve springs (17).

Take out split valve spring retainer lock (14) with tweezers (6).

The valve springs (17) of the inlet valves and exhaust valves are identical.

Replace valve stem seals

Remove lower valve spring retainer (20)



Check

Check upper and lower valve spring retainers (15, 20)

 Check valve spring retainers for pitting and replace if necessary.

Unscrew cylinder head (87) from assembly board (24) and remove valves

 Check surfaces of valve stems for roughness and ridging.

Replace valves that have rough stem surfaces or burrs.


