Remove/install

Remove left cylinder head cover.

Only if the left camshaft sprocket (5) is being removed.

Remove right cylinder head cover.

Only if the right camshaft sprocket (4) is being removed.

Attach set of hold-down tools (9) to center camshaft bearing on relevant cylinder head.

 The  hold-down tool (9) assumes function of camshaft bearings and relieves the load on camshaft brackets (10).

Turn the engine on the top dead center (TDC) on the 1st cylinder (ignition dead center) and check the markings (8) of the camshafts (1) as well as the TDC marking of the vibration damper (7).

 The markings (8) on the camshafts (1) must be aligned with each other and the markings (3) on camshafts must, seen in the direction of travel, be aligned with the upper edge of the cylinder head and lie on the left-hand side.
The TDC marking (arrow) on vibration damper (7) must be aligned with stay on timing case cover (6).

 Installation: If markings (8) on camshafts (1) or TDC marking (arrow) on vibration damper (7) do not coincide with stay on timing case cover (6), re-insert the timing chain (14).

Secure the timing chain (14) with a cable tie to the right camshaft sprocket (4) and/or the left camshaft sprocket (5).

Only if the right camshaft sprocket (4) and/or the left camshaft sprocket (5) is loosened from the camshaft (1) but not removed.

Remove chain tensioner (2).

Remove bolts (12).


Do not turn the engine when unscrewing the screws (12).
Otherwise, it will leave the basic position of the camshafts (1).

Remove the drive (13) from the right camshaft sprocket (4).

Only if the right camshaft sprocket (4) is being removed.

Mark position of timing chain (14) relative to right camshaft sprocket (4) to be removed and/or to the left camshaft sprocket (5).

Remove the right camshaft sprocket (4) to be removed and/or the left camshaft sprocket (5) from the camshaft (1).

 Installation: Pay attention to markings for the position of the timing chain (14).

Tie a cable tie to the timing chain (14), remove the right camshaft sprocket to be removed (4) and/or the left camshaft sprocket (5) from the timing chain (14) and carefully place the timing chain (14) on the cable tie into the timing chain chamber.

Install in the reverse order.
