Ensure utmost cleanliness when working on automatic transmissions.

Apply parking brake and engage transmission in "P" or "N" position.

Drain oil while hot.

Draining oil

Turn converter until the oil drain plug (3) appears in the opening of the converter housing.

Clean surroundings of the oil drain plug of the converter and oil pan (4) or banjo bolt (1) or union nut (2) of the oil filler pipe.

Unscrew oil drain plug and loosen oil filler pipe from the oil pan.

Allow oil to drain completely.

Clean oil drain plugs and replace sealing rings. Screw in drain plugs.

Observe tightening torque!

Filter change

Remove oil pan and clean thoroughly. Check gasket, replace if required.

Replace oil filter (4).

Observe tightening torque of mounting screws!

Attach oil pan.

Observe tightening torque of mounting screws!

Attach oil filler pipe.

720.1 (W 4 A 018): Replace sealing rings for banjo bolt.

Observe tightening torque!

Filling with oil

Pull oil dipstick (6) out of oil filler tube (5) and wipe with a lint-free cloth (preferably leather).

Insert filling funnel (special tool) into the opening of the filler pipe and fill with the following initial oil quantities:

720.1 (W 4 A 018) = approx. 4 l

720.5 (W 4 B 035) = approx. 6 l

722.3 (W 4 A 028) = approx. 4 l

Start engine. Shift all selector lever positions, remaining in each position for a few seconds. Then return transmission to "P" or "N".

At idle speed, check oil quantity and replenish any oil required until the specified oil level is indicated on the oil dipstick:

When the transmission is at operating temperature (approx. 80°C) on the maximum mark:

When the transmission is cold (20 - 30°C) the oil must be below the "minimum mark":

720.1 (W 4 A 018) = 35 mm

720.5 (W 4 B 035)1) = 15 mm

720.5 (W 4 B 035)2) = 50 mm

722.3 (W 4 A 028) = 10 mm

Caution: Excessive transmission oil must be drained or drawn off with the special tool "syringe and hose". Ensure utmost cleanliness of hose and syringe for this operation.

Insert oil dipstick and switch off engine.
