Phosphating ensures optimum adhesion for the subsequent layers in the paintwork structure.
Together with cathodic dip painting it ensures corrosion protection is given for the bodies.
Before the phosphating process, the body is degreased with a mild alkaline aqueous solution, cleaned and then rinsed with deionized water.
During the subsequent phosphating process, a crystalline protective layer of zinc-iron phosphate is produced on the steel or zinc-coated steel sheets.
The surface of the workpiece changes into a corrosion-protecting phosphate layer which is permanently attached to the base metal.
It increases the adhesive strength of the subsequent paintwork while preventing sub-migration or sub-rusting.
Further rinsing operations with deionized water remove the excess phosphating solution resulting in a chemically neutral body surface.
