Function requirements for Electronic Toll Collection, general
The ETC simplifies the process of payment on toll roads. It settles payment procedures automatically without the driver having to stop the car.
Electronic Toll Collection function sequence
The ETC/DSRC antenna (A2/94) and the Electronic Toll Collection control unit (A50/3) are installed in the vehicle for transmitting and receiving the data. The Electronic Toll Collection control unit communicates with the toll booth via the Electronic Toll Collection antenna. For automatic payment a special ETC card must be inserted into the Electronic Toll Collection control unit. All information concerning the user and the fees that have already been paid are stored on this card. At the vehicle side, the Electronic Toll Collection control unit is connected to the COMAND controller unit (A40/3) via an RS-232C interface. The COMAND controller unit is used to issue voice output and display messages for the ETC system in the vehicle.
Voice output
Messages are issued in the following cases:
ETC card read error
ETC card not accepted.
Error communicating with the toll station
Detailed account of charges available.
The COMAND controller unit receives the signals from the Electronic Toll Collection control unit and outputs them through the speaker system in vehicles except CODE 810 (Sound system). On vehicles with CODE 810 (Sound system) the COMAND controller unit forwards the signals over the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3), which then actuates the speaker system.
Display messages
Messages (pop-up windows) on the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) are issued, e.g. in the following cases:
COMAND controller unit is booted and the ETC card is not inserted.
COMAND controller unit is booted and ETC card is inserted.
Positive feedback from toll station
Negative feedback from toll station
The COMAND controller unit receives the signals from the Electronic Toll Collection control unit and transmits them via a low voltage differential signal (LVDS) line to the Audio/COMAND display.
