Audio/COMAND, general
The radio (Audio/COMAND) is the central control unit for the entertainment and communication systems integrated in the vehicle.
The Audio/COMAND function contains the following subfunctions, which are described in separate documents:
Audio mode
Navigation (with code EG9 (Garmin MAP PILOT))
Navigation mode (with code EJ9 (COMAND Online))
Telematic services
The following subfunctions are described further on in the document:
Video mode (with code EJ9 (COMAND Online))
Speaker output
Voice control system (with code EJ9 (COMAND Online))
The radio (Audio/COMAND) acts as a gateway from the user interface CAN to the telematics CAN and the MOST bus components.
The radio (Audio/COMAND) communicates via the MOST bus with the DAB control unit (with code E1D (Digital radio)).
The radio (Audio/COMAND) receives software uploads for all MOST subscribers from the diagnostic connector via the Ethernet connection.

Function requirements for video operation in general
With CODE EJ9 (COMAND Online)
Circuit 30g ON
Transport mode not active
Video DVD inserted in the radio's (Audio/COMAND) DVD drive
Video mode, general
The DVD drive of the radio (Audio/COMAND) supports the playback of video DVDs. The video image is displayed on the Audio/COMAND display depending on request and availability.
The video function can be operated using the:
Audio/COMAND control panel
Touchpad control unit
Voice control system (VCS [SBS])
Left multifunction steering wheel button group and right multifunction steering wheel button group
Function sequence for video mode
The Audio/COMAND control panel and the touchpad control unit transmit the control signals via the telematics CAN to the radio (Audio/COMAND).
The voice commands for the voice control system are converted into electrical signals by the hands-free system microphone and forwarded to the radio (Audio/COMAND) via the following route:
Overhead control panel (OCP [DBE]) control unit
SAM control unit
Vehicle CAN
Central gateway (CGW)
User interface CAN
The control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups are forwarded to the radio (Audio/COMAND) via the following route:
Steering wheel electronics
Steering LIN
Steering column tube module (MRM) control unit
Chassis CAN
Central gateway (CGW)
User interface CAN
The radio (Audio/COMAND) sends the picture signals over an LVDS line to the Audio/COMAND display control unit.
Audio output is carried out by the radio (Audio/COMAND) to the speaker system via direct lines.

A distinction is made between the following equipment:
Vehicles with code EL9 (Front and rear two-way speakers)
Vehicles with code E67(8-fold speaker system)
Vehicles with code EL9 (Front and rear two-way speakers)
The radio (Audio/COMAND) amplifies the audio signals and emits them via the following speakers:
Left front speaker
Right front speaker
Left rear speaker
Right rear speaker
Vehicles with code E67(8-fold speaker system)
The radio (Audio/COMAND) amplifies the audio signals and emits them via the following speakers:

Voice control system, general
Functions of the driver information system can be called up and operated via the voice control system (VCS). The voice control system is integrated in the radio (Audio/COMAND). The voice commands can be issued by spelling out or entering complete words.
Voice control system function sequence
The VCS is switched-on on the right multifunction steering wheel button group and switched off on the left multifunction steering wheel button group.
The control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups are forwarded to the radio (Audio/COMAND) via the following route:
Steering wheel electronics
Steering LIN
Steering column tube module (MRM) control unit
Chassis CAN
Central gateway (CGW)
User interface CAN
Voice input is carried out via the hands-free system microphone, which is integrated in the overhead control panel control unit (OCP). The spoken words are converted into electrical signals by the hands-free system microphone and forwarded to the radio (Audio/COMAND) via the following route:
SAM control unit
Vehicle CAN
Central gateway (CGW)
User interface CAN
