General
Vehicles with 48 V on-board electrical systems, hybrid vehicles and electric vehicles are each equipped with a 12 V on-board electrical system and an additional on-board electrical system (48 V or high-voltage). The 48 V on-board electrical system or high-voltage on-board electrical system provides voltage to consumers with high energy needs.
The 12 V on-board electrical system can be supplied with electrical energy from the 48 V or high-voltage on-board electrical system. The 48 V battery can be charged with energy from the 12 V on-board electrical system during steady-state charging of the 12 V on-board electrical system battery with an external charger.
Charging by energy transfer
The 48 V on-board electrical system or high-voltage on-board electrical system delivers the necessary energy to charge the 12 V on-board electrical system battery. Voltage from the 48 V on-board electrical system or high-voltage on-board electrical system is transformed to the voltage value of the 12 V on-board electrical system by means of a DC/DC converter and the energy fed into the 12 V on-board electrical system. As soon as the 12 V on-board electrical system battery is sufficiently charged again, the energy transfer procedure is ended.
Conversely, in vehicles with a 48 V on-board electrical system, the 48 V battery can also be charged by energy transfer from the 12 V on-board electrical system.
Charge auxiliary battery for ECO start-stop (hybrid vehicles with support concept)
The ECO start-stop auxiliary battery is charged by an energy transfer when the voltage drop during the ECO start is too large. An ECO stop is not permissible when charging. For charging, the ECO start/stop auxiliary battery is connected to the 12 V on-board electrical system.
