The mixture composition should remain within limits as close as possible to λ = 1 in order to achieve a high conversion of the exhaust gases in the catalytic converter.
The O2 reacts to the oxygen share in the exhaust and transmits a corresponding voltage signal to the

engine control unit for injection which causes the mixture composition to be altered in such a way that a mixture composition of λ = 1 exists for lambda control in all operating conditions. This procedure is constantly repeated (control loop), with the cycle rate depending on engine load and speed.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The lambda closed-loop control is operational in the following operating conditions (closed-loop control):
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Coolant temperature > 60°C (HFM)
O2 sensors have reached operating temperature
Idle/partial load
Deceleration fuel shutoff not active.
