Remove/install

 Danger!

Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform.

Align vehicle between columns of vehicle lift and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer.

Extend the adjustable steering column fully

Turn steering wheel to central position (front wheels in straight ahead position) and secure with the retaining device

 On a disengaged steering coupling (25) the steering wheel should not be turned because the spiral contact coil will be destroyed.



Detach heat shield

Remove steering coupling bolt on lower steering shaft (25a)



Push lower steering shaft (80a) upwards out of the steering coupling (25)

 Do not use force (hammer blows, excessive leverage) because the lower steering shaft (80a) is sensitive to lateral forces and can be damaged as a result.

 Installation: Turn rack-and-pinion steering into center position: 

 Installation: Insert bottom steering shaft (80a) fully into the steering coupling (25); pay attention to the studs of the steering coupling (25) and groove of the bottom steering shaft (80a).

Detach the locking plate (25f) from the steering coupling (25), in the process lift the lugs using a suitable tool

 Installation: Replace locking plate (25f) with self-locking nut. Push on the locking plate (25f) until the lugs latch in the steering coupling (25).

Remove steering wheel

Remove steering column switch module

Remove instrument cluster

Remove left cover under the dashboard

Unclip electrical connector (b) of steering column switch module from steering column tube (71)

Detach electrical connector (37p) at electric steering lock control unit (N26/5).

Disconnect cable ties of electrical lines for actuator motors on the mounting console

 Installation: Install new cable ties.

Detach electrical connections for steering column up/down motor and the steering column in/out motor

Detach cross strut

Remove bottom bolt of mounting console (91b) to crossmember



Remove upper bolts of mounting console (91a) to crossmember

 Installation: Do not tighten the upper console screws (91a) and lower console screw (91b). The steering column tube (71) must remain movable. Tighten the upper bolts of the mounting console (91a) first and then the lower bolt of the mounting console (91b).



Pull steering column tube (71) with lower steering shaft (80a) upwards until the lug of the mounting console (81) has moved out of the bore of the bracket

Push the steering column tube (71) with lower steering shaft (80a) downwards and remove through the footwell

 Do not use force, as the lower steering shaft (80a) is sensitive to forces applied from the side.

 Installation: If the boot has been pulled out of the firewall: 

Grease boot on steering column tube in area of sealing surface and insert from footwell into the firewall. Ensure that the continuous groove guarantees correct sealing.
