Risk of injury to skin or eyes caused by retarder oil escaping under high pressure | Do not carry out any work unless retarder is switched off. Wear suitable protective clothing and safety glasses when working on the hot retarder. | |

4 | Detach valve cover (3) | ||
5 | Push extractor (5) onto check valve (1) until it engages | Commercially available devices/tools | |
6 | Pull check valve (1) out of hydrodynamic retarder housing | Observe the assembly positions of the components of the check valve (1). | |
7 | Detach O-rings (4) | ||

8 | Check the check valve (1) for wear and condition | To check the guide piston, push the valve disk all the way in. | |

9 | Attach new O-rings (4) | ||
10 | Press check valve (1) into hydrodynamic retarder housing using a suitable tool | Observe the assembly positions of the components of the check valve (1). | |
11 | Attach valve cover (3) and fasten with screws (2) | Bolt and washer assembly for check valve (outlet) | |
12 | Install engine compartment paneling below transmission | See information from vehicle manufacturer. | |
13 | Perform a test drive and bleed hydrodynamic retarder | If present and possible, switch off the foot control of the hydrodynamic retarder. Move the vehicle at 50 km/h and switch on the hydrodynamic retarder 5 times in the first brake stage for approx. 5 s each time. |
