Remove/install brake shoes at rear axle

 Danger!

Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury caused by brake fluid coming into contact with skin and eyes.

Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid.

Remove left or right brake drum

Unhook spring (1) using commercially available brake spring pliers

 Install a new spring (1).

 Installation: Measure the brake shoes (3) diagonally using the vernier caliper (10) and adjust to the dimension (A), 202.6 mm, measured at the upper side of the linings.

Use a commercially available vernier caliper with a scale of at least 210 mm.

Detach circlips (2) and remove together with springs. Then remove retaining pins from brake anchor plate

 Install new circlips (2), springs and retaining pins.

Press back spring (7) on hand brake cable (9) and unhook hand brake cable (9)

 Rotate wheel hub (6) until a bolt hole is in the lower position

Tilt brake shoes (3) upward by 90° over wheel hub (6)

Compress brake piston (4) of wheel brake cylinder (5) and guide out brake shoes (3) upward

 Handle the brake shoes (3) with care. The dust boots on the brake pistons (4) of the wheel brake cylinder (5) can otherwise be damaged.

 Installation: The brake lining of the brake shoes (3) must be absolutely free of grease. The braking effect will otherwise be impaired.

Clean brake carrier plate (8)

 Installation: Apply a thin coating of assembly paste to the brake anchor plate (8) at the contact surfaces (arrows) of the brake shoes (3).

Check the ease of movement of the wheel brake cylinder (5) and leaktightness of the boots

 In the event of the slightest signs of brake fluid escape or sluggishness of the brake pistons of the wheel brake cylinder (5) this must be replaced, see: 
