1 Position steel straightedges at a distance of 5 x rim flange diameter d in front of and behind the rear axle and mark the position of the steel straightedges on the floor using chalk.
The steel straightedges can be positioned at different distances from the axle, but the distance between the steel straightedges must always be 10 times the value of the rim flange diameter. The toe can be read directly off the measuring scale in mm (millimeters). Then the exact value can be read off the conversion table.
Example:
d = 400 mm
Steel straightedge distance = 2 m in front of and 2 m behind the axle
2 Project the light spot on the front and rear measuring scale on the left side of the vehicle and align both steel straightedges to the same value by moving from side to side.
3 Align light spot to the measuring scale at the front and then at the back on the right side of the vehicle and read off values. The difference between the two values is the total toe.
If the front value is smaller, this is referred to as toe-in (+). If the toe is outside the tolerance, the axle housing is bent.
