Oil filler/drain screw on rear axle differential modified

Phased in as of 19.01.04

 The oil filler screws and oil drain screws should always be replaced after being unscrewed.

The new oil filler screws and drain screws as well as the tapped holes must be cleaned with a special cleaning spray and provided with a special sealing compound.

 Only carry out oil level check at interior temperature.

Danger!

Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform.

Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

Remove rear wheel



Remove/install wheels, rotate if necessary

Detach twelve-point nut on rear axle (37)

 In order to avoid wheel bearing damage, the vehicle must no longer be moved on its wheels when the twelve-point collar nut is loosened.

 Installation: Replace twelve-point collar nut.

Detach left rear rpm sensor (L6/3) or right rear rpm sensor (L6/4) from wheel carrier (7)



Detach bracket (1) of electrical feed line of left rear rpm sensor (L6/3) or right rear rpm sensor (L6/4) on wheel carrier (7)



Detach torque strut (3) from wheel carrier (7)

 Installation: The rear-axle shaft (37) must be horizontal when tightening the nut



Detach camber strut (2) from wheel carrier (7)

 Installation: The rear-axle shaft (37) must be horizontal when tightening the nut



Detach tie rod (4) from wheel carrier (7)

See: 

Remove/install tie rod; replace rubber mount

 Installation: The rear-axle shaft (37) must be horizontal when tightening the nut

Fold wheel carrier (7) down outwards and pull rear axle shaft (37) out of the rear axle shaft flange

 Do not overstretch the rear brake cable. Do not damage the rubber boot of rear axle shaft (37) and pulse ring for rpm sensor in order to prevent ESP malfunctions.

 If the rear axle shaft (37) is seized, see: 

Pressing rear axle shaft (37) out of the rear axle shaft flange.

Lever rear axle shaft (37) out of the rear axle center assembly (50) and take out sideways

 Do not damage radial sealing ring (32) in rear axle center assembly (50).

 Installation: Install new retaining ring (37o) on inner splined profile.



Checking

Check radial sealing ring (32) in rear axle center assembly (50)

Check for leaktightness and damage, if necessary: 

Replace radial sealing ring (32) in rear axle center assembly (50)

Install in the reverse order

Check oil level in rear axle differential (50) and correct if necessary.

 Mixing of old universal hypoid gear oil and the new FE hypoid gear oil should be avoided due to the better fuel economy.
