Adjustment device
A. Measuring production tolerance of differential housing
1 | Screw measuring pin into dial indicator (3). |
2 | Press spacer piece (4) firmly against the adjustment device (1) and adjust 2 mm preload on the dial indicator (3). |
3 | Set dial indicator (3) to zero. |
This also sets the adjustment device (1) to the desired basic dimension. |

4 | Insert measuring piece (2) into differential housing. |
5 | Guide adjustment device (1) into differential housing and determine highest position (vertical position in relation to measuring piece) of measuring pin by turning back and forth. |
6 | Measure production difference in relation to specified basic dimension. |
If necessary on rear axles with differential lock, also push the ring onto the left-hand side of the adjustment device (1). |
If the dimension deviates toward the center of the ring gear ( dial indicator indicates more than 2 mm), subtract this difference from the difference dimension of the drive pinion. If the dimension deviates toward the drive pinion ( dial indicator indicates less than 2 mm), add this difference to the difference dimension of the drive pinion. The difference dimension determined in this way corresponds to the material thickness of the spacer washer. |

B. Deviation from specified basic dimension (lapped gear sets only)
Specified basic dimension minus the dimension engraved on ring gear results in the deviation from specified basic dimension.
Example 1:
Specified basic dimension: 66.00 mm
Dimension engraved on the ring gear: 66.02 mm
66.00 mm - 66.02 mm = - 0.02 mm
Deviation from specified basic dimension: - 0.02 mm
Example 2:
Specified basic dimension: 66.00 mm
Dimension engraved on the ring gear: 65.96 mm
66.00 mm - 65.96 mm = + 0.04 mm
Deviation from specified basic dimension: + 0.04 mm
Examples for calculating the thickness of spacer washer with lapped gear sets
The spacer washer to be installed is the result of adding the difference dimension of drive pinion and deviation from specified basic dimension and production deviation of differential housing (in the direction of ring gear).
Example 1:
Difference dimension of drive pinion : 5.18 mm
Deviation from specified basic dimension: -0.02 mm
Production deviation of differential housing (in the direction of ring gear): -0.06 mm
5.18 mm + (- 0.02 mm) + (- 0.06 mm) = 5.10 mm
Spacer washer to be installed 5.10 mm
Example 2:
Difference dimension of drive pinion: 5.36 mm
Deviation from basic dimension: + 0.04 mm
Production deviation of differential housing (in the direction of drive pinion): + 0.02 mm
5.36 mm + 0.04 mm + 0.02 mm = 5.42 mm
Spacer washer to be installed 5.42 mm
Examples for calculating the thickness of spacer washer with ground gear sets
The spacer washer to be installed is the result of adding the difference dimension of drive pinion and production deviation of differential housing (in the direction of ring gear).
Example 1:
Difference dimension of drive pinion : 5.18 mm
Production deviation of differential housing (in the direction of ring gear): - 0.06 mm
5.18 mm + (- 0.06 mm) = 5.12 mm
Spacer washer to be installed 5.12 mm
Example 2:
Difference dimension of drive pinion: 5.36 mm
Production deviation of differential housing (in the direction of drive pinion): + 0.02 mm
5.36 mm + 0.02 mm = 5.38 mm
Spacer washer to be installed 5.38 mm
The spacer washers are available in thicknesses from 5.00 mm to 5.68 mm in graduations of 0.02 mm.
