Remove the left and right air guide duct (11)

Remove air filter housing (12).

Engine 112, 113: Lift air filter housing vertically off rubber retainers on cylinder head covers.

 Installation: Engine 112, 113: Rub liquid lubricant into rubber holder on cylinder head covers and sealing ring of hot film mass air flow sensor in the air filter housing (12).

Attach engine hoist and raise engine

 Make sure when lifting out engine that no cables and lines are damaged and that engine does not hit against partition wall.

Remove right and left front axle shaft (60)

Remove intermediate shaft (34)

Remove shield for right bellows on steering gear

Release engine mount at bottom

Mark propeller shaft of front axle gear (70) relative to flange on front axle gear (50)

Detach propeller shaft of front axle gear (70) from flange of front axle gear (50)

 Installation: Observe markings.



Tie front axle gear propeller shaft (70) to one side.

Detach high pressure line for power steering pump and electrical line for speed-sensitive power steering on front axle carrier (1)

 2 bolts and 1 clip.

Remove retaining panel (1h) of rack-and-pinion steering



Pull rack-and-pinion steering slightly backwards and tie in place

Support the front axle carrier (5) with a telescopic transmission jack and passenger car transmission platform

Remove bolts (1f) from front axle carrier (1).

 Installation: The bolts (1f) are self-tapping, so the following points must be observed:

 Never retap the thread in the side member

 Replace screws (1f).

 Use only original bolts (4 x)

 Do not insert bolts (1f) at an incline
when turning in

 Do not use an impact bolt tightener

 Observe tightening torque

Before tightening the bolts (1f), align the front axle carrier (1) on the left and right using a suitable drift (057). After this, insert rubber plugs.

 Installation: Before tightening bolts (1f), align front axle carrier (1) on left and right using drift (057, dia. 11.7 mm). After this, insert rubber plugs.

Lower front subframe (1)

 Secure front axle carrier (1) to prevent it from falling out.

Remove exhaust shielding plate (69)

Detach right supporting bracket (58)

 To do this, lower the engine slightly to provide better access to the bolts.



 Insert drift into radial sealing ring on outside right of front axle gear (50)

 This is to prevent transmission oil from flowing out of the opening when the front axle gear (50) is lifted out.



Detach and lift out front axle gear (50)

 The front axle gear (50) is secured with four bolts on the left and three bolts on the right.

 Ensure that no transmission oil escapes.



Install in the reverse order

Check front axle gear oil level and correct if necessary

Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS, read out and erase fault memory

Perform wheel alignment check
