| Important information and preliminary measures | Always follow the recommended personal safety measures to avoid accidents as well as the environmental protection measures. | |
Considering that the rear springs have fundamental importance in vehicle behavior, we suggest that their maintenance is always carried out in both springs, right and left.
| Remove | ||
1 | Place the vehicle on flat and level ground that permits working safely. Chock the front wheels to avoid the vehicle's unintentional rolling | This in the case of having to work outside the appropriate elevator or pit for this type of work.
2 | Turn-off the master switch | As it deals with electronic vehicles, always follow the recommendations for this type of vehicles.
3 | With the vehicle on the ground, slacken the rear axle wheels. Rear wheel removal will take place later-on with the vehicle suspended
Danger! | Take due precautions when lifting the vehicle | Risk of serious accidents.
Do not lift the vehicle by the center of the axles.
In this type of work it is necessary to support the vehicle by the side rails to be able to move the axle. It occurs that if the axle remains hung, the shock absorbers may exceed their normal stroke and be seriously damaged without the mechanic noticing it. In this case, to prevent any damage, the shock absorbers are to be detached at their bottom end before supporting the side rails. Be careful with the brake linings (13). They may get damaged if the axle is moved excessively downward.
4 | Support the vehicle on stands placed safely under the side rails, on both sides, at front and rear, in order to permit working safely. In this position, the rear axle can be moved according to the work requirements | The vehicle must not be lifted only on one side with the opposite wheel remaining on the ground. The vehicle has to be lifted equally on both sides.
5 | Slightly and carefully lift the rear axle until the spring articulations remain free | Chock the front axle with safety to remain in this position during removal and installation of the rear springs.
6 | Remove the wheels | ||
7 | Loosen the stabilizer lateral arms at the top articulations on the side rails brackets
8 | Loosen the flange self-locking nuts (10) of the spring “U” bolts (12) slightly without detaching the spring (1) | The spring remains fastened to the support plate with the center pin (king-bolt) fitted in its housing.
9 | Remove, in front articulation, from the inside, the nut of the bolt (9), both flanged | As a safety measure, the bolt (9) may remain in its housing.
10 | Control the height of the axle and on the rear articulation, remove the shackle the flange bolts (5) and (6), lift out the inside plate (7) on which the bolts are screwed-on. Remove the outside plate (8) | Observe the position of the bolts and of the plates.
11 | Remove the flange self-locking nuts (11), the “U” bolts (12) and the "U" bolts positioning guide
12 | Lift out the flange bolt (9) at front and remove the complete spring carefully in order not to damage the fitting bore of the king-bolt on the bottom support plate on the rear axle | The housing bolt of the king-bolt in the support plate on the axle is important, as it defines the correct position of the spring center in relation to the axle.
| Installing | ||
13 | Confirm the cleaning of the fitting bore of the king-bolt, of the spring (1) seating surface on the bottom support plate on the vehicle rear axle
14 | Install the front spring (1) on the support plate and fit the spring carefully | Observe the correct position of the spring on the support over the rear axle.
15 | In the top part install the "U" bolts positioning piece. Sparingly grease the “U” bolts (11) thread and install them on the spring (1) with the self-locking flange nuts (11). Tighten lightly on both sides. However, the final tightening will be applied later with the vehicle on the ground | "U" bolts in poor conditions or with damaged threads, will have to be replaced together with the flange nuts.
16 | Control the axle height and install at the rear on the outside the plate (8) and on the inside the tapped plate (7), tighten, without the final tightening, the flange bolts (5) and (6)
17 | install the flange bolt (9) in the front articulation on the bracket (4) and tighten form the inside the flange nut without the final tightening
18 | If the spring is correctly fitted and aligned, tighten all the nuts of the articulation bolts | Flange nut of the spring front articulation bolt.
Flange bolts of the shackle rear articulations.
| |||
Danger! | Take the due precautions when lifting or lowering the vehicle to remove the blocks from the side rails | Risk of serious accidents.
19 | Install the wheels, remove the stands and support the vehicle on them | Re-tighten the wheels with the vehicle on the ground.
20 | Install the rear shock absorbers
21 | Install the rear stabilizer lateral arms and tighten the flange bolts and nuts on the top articulation with the bracket
22 | Tighten the self-locking flange nuts (11) of the rear spring “U” bolts (12) | Tighten sequentially and in a crosswise pattern. Whenever possible, re-tighten the spring "U" bolts after the vehicle has been driven for some time in laden condition (approximately 500 to 1000 km). Carry out the re-tightening with the vehicle unladen.
| |||
23 | Whenever possible, carry out the axles parallelism adjustment and of the steering geometry | Carry out the adjustments following the technical data corresponding to the vehicle.
24 | Do a test-drive and check the vehicle behavior |
