Remove/install

Detach ground line from battery

Drain engine oil and catch in a suitable container

 Installation: Replace sealing ring for drain screw.

Detach oil dipstick guide tube and remove from oil pan top section

 The oil dipstick guide tube remains in the engine compartment.

 Screw/bolt for oil-dipstick guide tube

Check sealing ring for oil dipstick guide tube in the oil pan. For damage or leaks:



Replace sealing ring.

Remove center and rear engine compartment paneling downwards

Detach bracket (3) on oil pan and place to the side

Detach contact protection on circuit 30 electrical line (1)

Detach electrical line circuit 30 (1)

 Nut, connection for circuit 30

Detach electrical line circuit 50 (2)

 Nut, connection for circuit 50

Remove screw/bolts (4)

 Screw/bolt, starter to cylinder crankcase

Unscrew nut (5) and carefully press elastomer bearing (6) upwards

Remove starter (M1) from below

 Model 222 with engine 642
with code M005 (4MATIC)
Remove oil dipstick guide tube from oil pan top section and hold.



Check

Detach charge air cooler and place with attached coolant lines to one side

Check the ring gear on drive plate for damage and wear

Check ring gear on drive plate

When replacing the starter (M1)

 Rotate engine at crankshaft in direction of engine rotation.

If damaged or worn



Replace drive plate.

Check oil level of engine

Correct if necessary.

Check engine oil level using on-board oil dipstick


