Removing

Remove engine

 Raise engine on the assembly stand in such a way that the timing case is freely accessible.

Danger!

Risk of explosion as fuel vapors can ignite. Risk of poisoning from inhaling fuel vapors and exposed handling of fuel. Risk of injury if fuel splashes hit the eyes.

No fire, naked flame or smoking. Avoid formation of sparks.
Only pour and store fuels into canisters explicitly provided for this purpose.

Wear protective gloves and, if appropriate, safety goggles when handling fuel.

Remove injection pump

Remove starter

Remove belt pulley / vibration damper

Remove coolant pump

Remove engine oil cooler

Unscrew cover with support arm (1)

Unscrew drive wheel for air compressor (2)

 Push off drive wheel with the aid of two assembly levers.

Pull camshaft (3) out of the crankcase

 Pull out camshaft in direction of timing case.

Take out tappet rods



Checking

Inspect camshaft

 Inspect for hardness, concentric running, cam elevations, dimensional tolerance, cracks, scores and centering holes.

If the camshaft has

- has cracked. 

Repair camshaft

by defining the required repair size if the camshaft has

- a radial runout, or

- score marks in the journal

. 

After completing repairs, once again inspect camshaft!

Ensure that camshaft bearing journals and camshaft bearings match, replace camshaft bearings if necessary

Installing

Insert tappet rods

First oil tappet rods with engine oil.

Push camshaft (3) into crankcase

- Before installing, oil bearing journals with engine oil.

- The tooth marked with "1" on the crankshaft sprocket must be positioned between the teeth marked with "1" on the camshaft sprocket.

- Two fitters are required for pushing in camshaft in order to avoid damaging the camshaft bearings in the crankcase.

Place drive wheel for air compressor (2) on the camshaft and tighten firmly

- The machined side of the drive wheel must point in the direction camshaft sprocket.

- While tightening the hexagonal bolts, counterhold at the drive wheel of the injection pump if necessary.



 If the measurement is not within the specified tolerance: 

Remove timing case, inspect thrust washer, replace if necessary, re-install timing case

Attach cover with support arm (1)

 Coat separating surface on crankcase with sealing compound.


