Checking

Rotate engine using turning device in direction of engine rotation until the piston on the cylinder to be checked is at ignition TDC

 Both push rods (3) are relieved and valve clearance (A) is available at both rocker arms (1).



Check valve clearance (A); adjust if necessary

 Check and adjust valve clearance when engine is cold, at the earliest 30 minutes after switching off the engine.



Attach dial indicator holder (4) with dial indicator (5) in such a way that the tracer pin of the
dial indicator (5) bottoms on the valve spring retainer of the valve spring (6) or on the
valve bridge (7)

 The preload must be about 15 mm so that the measuring travel is adequate for the valve stroke (B).



Set scale of dial indicator (5) to "0"

Crank engine with cranking device in direction of rotation of engine and read off valve stroke (B)

 The maximum valve lift (B) is indicated on the dial indicator (5) when the pointer begins to move in the opposite direction.



Compare measurement on valve lift (B) with the specified value

 If measurement is less than the specified value the camshaft must be checked for wear after checking all
valves (2): 

Remove, check camshaft, replace if necessary

Carry out inspection at all valves (2)
