Risk of injury caused by touching hot retarder and by scalding from hot retarder oil. Risk of injury to skin or eyes caused by retarder oil escaping under high pressure

Do not carry out any work unless retarder is switched off. Wear suitable protective clothing and safety glasses when working on the hot retarder.

Conduct a road test

Switch on the retarder several times during the road test in order to bring the oil to operating temperature.

Switch off ignition

 The vehicle must be horizontal and the retarder oil must be at operating temperature for checking the oil level.

Visual inspection

 Visual inspection of retarder for leaks, check propeller shaft bolts and mounting bolts on heat exchanger are correctly seated.

Detach the engine compartment paneling under the transmission

Clean area surrounding drain screws for the retarder/oil reservoir (1, 2)

Clean area around screw plug for pressure regulating valve (4)

Remove drain screws for retarder/oil reservoir (1, 2)

 Drain the oil when hot, collect with a suitable container and allow to drain completely.

Remove screw plug from pressure regulating valve (4)

 Collect escaping fluid with a suitable container and allow to drain completely.

Clean oil strainer on pressure regulating valve

 Replace if necessary in the event of damage.

Insert oil strainer

Screw the screw plug for the pressure regulating valve (4) into the retarder

 On the version with integral plastic sealing ring the screw plug (4) must be replaced if the plastic sealing ring is damaged. Replace the copper sealing ring on the version with copper sealing ring.

Screw in drain screws for retarder/oil reservoir (1, 2)

 On the version with integral plastic sealing ring the drain screw (1, 2) must be replaced if the plastic sealing ring is damaged. Replace the copper sealing ring on the version with copper sealing ring.

Open maintenance flap covering transmission

Clean area around screw plug for oil filler opening on oil reservoir (3)

Remove screw plug for oil filler opening from oil reservoir (3)

Pour in oil

 Measure oil quantity exactly before filling. Add the oil slowly over a period of at least 3 minutes.



Screw the screw plug for oil filler opening into oil reservoir (3)

 On the version with integral plastic sealing ring the oil filler screw (3) must be replaced in the event of the plastic sealing ring being damaged. Replace the copper sealing ring on the version with copper sealing ring.

Conduct a road test

 Bleed retarder:

-If present and possible, switch off retarder foot control.

-Drive vehicle at 50 km/h.

-Switch on retarder in first brake stage 5 times for approx. 5 seconds each.
