General assessment of leakage
Check oil level in reservoir:
If oil level is not OK: Locate leakage; use leak oil detection spray if necessary.
If oil level is not OK, but no external oil loss is visible, detach side boots from steering gear. If the side sealing rings are leaky, the oil will collect in the boots but will not always be visible from outside.
Component | Notes | Remedy
1 | Power steering pump | Check for any leakages at interfaces (connection fittings, sealing rings).
If there is leakage | Install new seals.
Check oil reservoir and oil feed to power steering pump.
If there is leakage | Seal oil reservoir and oil feed.
Check power steering pump.
If there is leakage | Replace power steering pump.
2 | High-pressure/low-pressure line | Examine interfaces to components (connection fittings, sealing rings).
If there is leakage | Replace sealing rings and/or replace high-pressure/low-pressure line.
Check high-pressure/low-pressure line for chafe marks and cracks.
If damage is present | Replace high-pressure/low-pressure line.
Check ferrule fitting at transition between steel and hose.
If there is leakage | Replace high-pressure/low-pressure line.
3 | Steering gear | Check steering gear in steering shaft area.
If there is leakage | Replace steering gear.
Check interfaces between steering gear and connections for high-pressure/low-pressure line
If there is leakage | Replace sealing ring and, if necessary, support ring.
Check side sealing rings of toothed rack under boot.
If there is leakage | Replace steering gear.
Check whether leakage is present at oil lines (from control head to steering gear housing).
If there is leakage | Replace steering gear. |
