Risk of injury when handling solid carbon dioxide (dry ice) caused by touching extremely cold objects or by inhaling gaseous carbon dioxide

Wear protective gloves against low temperatures, adequate protective clothing and eye wear. Work on the product in well-ventilated environments.

Possible risks

Risk of injury

The contact with solid carbon (dry ice) or super-cooled objects can cause burning skin lesions or serious eye damage.

An evaporation of solid carbon dioxide (dry ice) spreads carbon dioxide gas, which at high concentration may reduce the ability of human reflex and can cause suffocation without early symptoms. At low concentration it can cause fast breathing and headaches.

Protective measures / rules of conduct

- It is forbidden to eat, drink, smoke or store food at the workplace.

- Ensure that the workplace is well ventilated. Never use solid carbon dioxide (dry ice) in areas with gullies, canalization or basements.

- Carefully handle the solid carbon dioxide (dry ice) tanks and dry them thoroughly before using them.. Prevent the loss of the carbon dioxide.

- Avoid open flames, as the fire could cause an explosion of the carbon dioxide tank.

- When transporting or transferring sold carbon dioxide (dry ice), avoid spilling the product. Don't fill the tank over its maximum.

- Store solid carbon dioxide (dry ice) only in for the product suitable containers.

- Keep water out of the container.

- Use protective clothing, safety glasses, appropriate thermal gloves (for example: leather, Aramaic)..

First aid actions

- In case of contact with the eyes, do not rub, remove contact lenses and rinse the eyes with plenty of water. In severe cases immediately provide medical care. In case of contact with the skin, wash the affected body part with plenty of water at room temperature. If the burn results in skin lesions or freezes clothing, immediately provide medical care.

- In case of inhalation, immediately take the affected person to a well-ventilated area and keep them calm and warm. If necessary provide artificial respiration and medical care.

- Immediate medical assistance is critical in all cases of severe exposure.
