After adjusting pre-load of differential bearings and ring gear and pinion backlash, check and, if found necessary, adjust ring gear and pinion contact pattern.
Correct contact pattern is obtained by varying pinion depth or backlash; this being of basic importance for assembly durability.
Checking the contact pattern |
1 Mark two ring gear teeth, separated by 180° on opposite sides, with contact paint.
2 Turn the pinion back and forth while simultaneously braking the crown gear with a block of hardwood.
3 Compare the contact marks obtained with the examples below and if necessary, make the necessary corrections. |

In practice, generally the ideal contact pattern is not obtained. However, it is important that they do not touch in any place the outside edge of the tooth surface.
Correct contact pattern |

Contact pattern on the tooth's base (incorrect) |
Correction: | |
Increase a little bit the assembly distance (basic measurement) of the pinion. |

Contact pattern on the tooth's head (incorrect) |
Correction: | |
Reduce a little bit the assembly distance (basic measurement) of the pinion. |

Contact pattern close the thicker flanks of the tooth (incorrect) |
Correction: | |
Set the crown gear a little bit closer to the pinion. |

Contact pattern close the thinner flanks of the tooth (incorrect) |
Correction: | |
Set the crown gear a little bit farther of the pinion. |
