General
The crank assembly converts the combustion energy from the combustion chamber from a linear movement of the piston into a rotary movement of the crankshaft and transfers the torque to the transmission.

Function
The crank assembly is tasked with converting the compressive force of the combustion on the piston and the resulting linear movement of the piston in the cylinder into the rotary movement of the crankshaft.
If the fuel/air mixture ignites in the combustion chamber, it generates a force on the piston crown. The piston transfers the force in the linear downward movement to the crankshaft via mounted connecting rods. The eccentrically arranged crank pins at the crankshaft convert this force via the lever arm into a torque. The oscillating movement of the piston causes the gas exchange in the combustion chamber by sucking in the fresh air and outputting the exhaust gases. The piston rings on the pistons seal off the combustion chamber from the crankcase and prevent engine oil from the crankcase from flowing into the combustion chamber.
