| Remove/install | ||
Danger! | Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. | Align vehicle between columns of vehicle lift and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer.
1 | Move the steering wheel out up to the end position in the longitudinal direction
2 | Deactivate easy entry/exit | Deactivate the easy entry and exit feature, otherwise the windshield may be damaged when the retainer is mounted.
3 | Turn front wheels to straight-ahead position and secure steering wheel with holding device | On a disengaged steering coupling (25) the steering wheel should not be turned because the spiral contact coil will be destroyed.
Retainer | |||
4 | Unscrew bolts (1a) and remove the heat shield (1) from the steering gear (23) | The heat shield (1) can be removed downwards in the direction of travel between the front axle carrier (2) and steering gear pitman arm (29).
| |||
5 | Separate the bolted connection of the steering coupling (25) on the steering gear and detach steering coupling (25) from the steering gear (23) | Do not use force (hammer blows, excessive leverages), in order to avoid damaging the steering gear (23). If necessary carefully expand the clamping device of the steering coupling (25) using a wide screwdriver.
| |||
6 | Identify the installation position of the steering coupling (25) relative to the lower steering shaft (80a) with a colored pencil | Do not make any notches and scratches, the service life of the components would be reduced.
7 | Separate the bolted connection of the steering coupling (25) at the lower steering shaft (80a)
8 | Detach steering coupling (25) from the lower steering shaft (80a) and remove | Do not apply excessive force (hammer blows, excessive lever action) because the lower steering shaft (80a) is sensitive to lateral loads. If necessary carefully expand the clamping device of the steering coupling (25) using a wide screwdriver.
9 | Install in the reverse order |
