Danger! | Risk of injury caused by touching hot retarder and by scalding from hot retarder oil. Risk of injury to skin or eyes caused by retarder oil escaping under high pressure | Do not carry out any work unless retarder is switched off. Wear suitable protective clothing and safety glasses when working on the hot retarder. | |
1 | Switch off ignition | The vehicle must be horizontal and the retarder oil must be at operating temperature for checking the oil level. Drain oil from retarder | |
2 | Detach the engine compartment paneling under the transmission | For model NMB 613.355 /455 /485 /358 /388 | |

3 | Drain oil from retarder | ||
4 | Remove bolt and washer assembly (2). | ||
5 | Remove valve cover (3) | ||
6 | Pull check valve (outlet) (1) out of retarder housing | ||
7 | Remove O-rings (4) | ||
8 | Install check valve (outlet) (1) | Check rubber lining of valve disk (6) for signs of wear and damage. Check sleeve bore (7) for wear and out-of-roundness. Press in valve disk (6) up to end stop and check guide piston (8) for signs of wear. If damaged or worn, install a new check valve (outlet) (1). | |
9 | Install check valve (outlet) (1) | Observe installation position. Pull on new O-rings (4). Use suitable tool to press check valve (outlet) (1) into retarder housing. | |
10 | Install in the reverse order | | |
11 | Install engine compartment paneling below transmission | For model NMB 613.355 /455 /485 /358 /388 | |

12 | Conduct a road test | Bleed retarder: - If present and possible: Switch off retarder- foot control. -Drive vehicle at 50 km/h. - Switch on retarder in first brake times in succession for approx. 5 s each time. |
