1 To check the contact pattern, coat two teeth of the ring gear offset by 180 degrees with paint.
2 Brake ring gear with holding device (01).
3 Turn drive pinion forwards and backwards.
The following contact pattern conditions on the ring gear can occur under load (ring gear braked):

a Correct tooth bearing
Generally such an ideal contact pattern cannot be achieved in practice. However it is important that the contact pattern has a toe-side (towards the ring gear center) position under drive and overrun.
The tooth surface must not touch the outer edge at any point.

B Load bearing at tooth crest (incorrect)
Measures:
Reduce installation distance (basic dimension) of the drive pinion slightly and simultaneously increase the installation distance of the ring gear slightly.
The ring gear teeth engage slightly less in the drive pinion teeth and the gear backlash is retained.

C Load bearing at tooth root (incorrect)
Measures:
Increase installation distance (basic dimension) of the drive pinion slightly and simultaneously reduce the installation distance of the ring gear slightly.
The ring gear teeth engage slightly more in the drive pinion teeth and the gear backlash is retained.
