1 Preload rear tapered roller bearing of countershaft in installed condition using strip clamps (adjust until free of clearance).
2 Position dial gauge holder with dial gauge on face of rear section of transmission housing, position tip of dial gauge on face, preload dial gauge and set scale to "0".
3 Set up tip of dial gauge on outer race of tapered roller bearing, read off measurement at dial gauge and record measured value (protrusion of tapered roller bearing in relation to face).
Do not turn scale of dial gauge further.

4 Position dial gauge holder with dial gauge on sealing surface of rear housing cover, position dial gauge on lay-on surface of tapered roller bearing outer race in rear housing cover, read off measurement at dial gauge and record measured value (lowering depth).
5 Select suitable shims for end play.
Thickness of shims:
Lowering depth minus protrusion of tapered roller bearing and end play of countershaft.
