Adjusting sleeve
1 | Preload the tapered roller bearings using adjusting sleeve (3) while turning constant speed gear 2 (6). |
The tapered roller bearings are sufficiently preloaded when the 2 (6) becomes difficult to turn. |
2 | Loosen adjusting sleeve (3) slightly. |
3 | Turn constant speed gear 2 (6) several times while tapping the constant speed gear 2 (6) using a plastic mallet. |
To release stresses. |
4 | Screw on adjusting sleeve (3) again slightly by hand. |

5 | Attach dial indicator (1) to adjusting gauge (2). |
If the pin of the dial indicator (1) is too short, use the extension. |
6 | Attach adjusting gauge (2) so that it slides on adjusting sleeve (3). |
7 | Use dial indicator (1) to measure to collar of main shaft (4). |
8 | Set dial indicator (1) to zero. |
9 | Using dial indicator (1), measure to collar of tapered roller bearing (5), dimension "A". |
10 | Calculate thickness of shim to be inserted. |
Dimension "A"- 0.20 mm= Thickness of shim to be inserted. |

11 | Using a suitable pulling device, pull off constant speed gear 2 (6) until an axial play of approx. 1.0 mm is reached. |
12 | Fit calculated shim (8) and pressure plate (7) on collar of journal. |
13 | Fit adjusting sleeve (3) and tighten until the pressure plate (7) has pushed the tapered roller bearing back into its installation position. |
14 | Attach dial indicator (1) to adjusting gauge (2). |
15 | Attach adjusting gauge (2) so that it slides on adjusting sleeve (3). |
16 | Position dial indicator (1) on ground surface of constant speed gear 2 (6) and turn constant speed gear 2 (6) approx. 20 times. |
17 | Set dial indicator (1) to zero. |
18 | Turn constant speed gear 2 (6) in both directions slightly and, while simultaneously pushing up/down (arrows), read off bearing play at dial indicator (1). |
Do not use a screwdriver or assembly iron to press the constant speed gear 2 (6) up and down. |
19 | If there is any deviation, correct using appropriate shim (8) and repeat measuring procedure. |
The objective is to have an axial play at the lowest tolerance limit. |
