Danger | Risk of fire/risk of explosion due to short circuit and escaping oxyhydrogen gas. Risk of (burn) injury caused by caustic burns to eyes, skin and mucous membranes from battery electrolyte/mist, short circuit and arcing. Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing battery electrolyte or absorption of lead through the skin or body orifices. Risk of death due to voltage U >= 30 V AC and U >= 60 V DC. | No fires, sparks, open flames, or smoking. Wear acid-resistant gloves, clothing, and glasses. Pour battery acid only into suitable and appropriately marked containers.
1 | Disconnecting the battery
Topical note | Notes on battery
Warning | Risk of injury caused by body parts being pinched or crushed as cab is tilted | Ensure that no one is within the tilting range of the cab as it is being tilted. Always tilt the cab all the way to the end position and secure it with the safety strut.
2 | Tilt cab | ||
Topical note | Notes on tilting the cab
3 | Remove soundproofing on right and soundproofing at bottom
4 | Remove charge air pipe (4) |
| |
Model 673, 674, 676 | |||
5 | Remove exhaust pipe (17) from the engine brake valve fitting (14) | Bolt, clamp to exhaust pipe on valve fitting for engine brake/exhaust fitting
6 | Remove compressed-air line (15) from engine brake cylinder
7 | Remove heat insulation (12) from the exhaust gas turbocharger (9) and the cylinder crankcase | Installation: In the case of model 673, 674, 676, connect the heat insulation (12) together with the bracket of the compressor suction line to the cylinder crankcase.
Bolt, shield to turbocharger
8 | Remove oil return hose (11) at exhaust gas turbocharger (9) | Catch escaping and engine oil and seal bores.
9 | Remove oil pressure line (8) from exhaust gas turbocharger (9) | Seal bores.
Installation: Before installation of oil pressure line (8), fill the exhaust gas turbocharger bearing housing through the oil inlet hole with a small amount of engine oil. Rotate exhaust gas turbocharger shaft by hand during this step so that bearing points are provided with a film of oil. Replace sealing rings (7).
Bolt, oil pressure line to turbocharger
Union nut, oil pressure line to turbocharger
10 | Remove oil pressure line (8) from the oil filter housing | Seal bores.
Installation: Replace sealing rings (7).
11 | Remove the air intake hose (10) from the exhaust gas turbocharger (9)
12 | Remove the exhaust manifold (2), exhaust gas turbocharger (9) and engine brake valve fitting (14) together | Only loosen the rear screw (3) in the bottom row, the exhaust manifold (2) hands on this screw (3).
Bolt, exhaust manifold to cylinder head
13 | Take off gaskets (1) | Installation: Install new seals (1). The "TOP" marking of the seals (1) must point towards the exhaust manifold (2).
14 | Remove the exhaust gas turbocharger (9) with the attach engine brake valve fitting (14) from the exhaust manifold (2)
Topical note | Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts
Only when replacing exhaust manifold (2).
Nut, turbocharger to exhaust manifold
15 | Measure shank length (L) of screws (3) | If the maximum shank length (L) has been exceeded, replace screw (3).
Exhaust manifold bolts
16 | Install in the reverse order
17 | Check engine oil level with oil dipstick or on display, add oil if necessary
Notes on engine oil | |||
Observe engine oil grade set in maintenance system or Specifications for Operating Fluids.
Warning | Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. | Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts.
18 | Start engine and allow to run in idle for 10 s until the oil pressure has built up, then run the engine at varying speeds
