Dial indicator holder

1	 Position dial indicator holder with  dial indicator on axle housing so that probe of  dial indicator is perpendicular to tooth flank.

2	Check the gear backlash by moving the ring gear to and fro.

 This procedure should be repeated on at least 4 positions on the circumference of the ring gear.

 The gear backlash is changed by replacing the shims between the axle housing and bearing. If a thinner shim is installed on one side, then a shim which is thicker to the same extent must be installed on the opposite side, in order to retain the bearing preload.
