In the light of recent events we would like to once again point out that with regard to the above-mentioned models the rear-axle shaft flange may only be removed after dismantling the wheel carrier and on a stationary hydraulic press.

The double-row tapered roller bearings result in extractor forces that are up to three times higher than those for the double-row angular-contact ball bearings in the other models.

The extractor tool
202 589 04 43 00 is not designed to handle such forces.

Removal of the rear-axle shaft flange with double-row tapered roller bearings at the vehicle is not possible.

Due to the fact that Repair instructions for the models 124 will not be revised the scope of work from the WIS can be referred to in the operating instructions listed below.

With immediate effect, in order to make application of the extractor tool 202 589 04 43 00 even safer on all passenger-car models, with the exception of the above-mentioned ones, a shearing pin is to be fitted to the pressure screw on the hydraulic auxiliary press. This pin will shear at 40 Nm. This rules out any possible further build up of pressure at the auxiliary press.

The modified pressure screw with shear pin is available as a spare part under the special tool part no. 202 589 04 43 11.
