Danger! | Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. | Align vehicle between columns of vehicle lift and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer.
Cooler for low-temperature water circuit (5), transmission cooler (4), condenser for the A/C (2) and cooler (7) create a unit and can therefore only be removed together.
| Notes on coolant | ||
1 | Switch off ignition | ||
2 | Open engine hood | ||
3 | Open cap on coolant expansion reservoir | Turn cap slowly and release excess pressure, then unscrew cap.
4 | Remove fan unit | ||
5 | Discharge air conditioning system and evacuate
6 | Raise vehicle | ||
7 | Remove bottom engine compartment paneling
8 | Drain coolant at radiator (7)
| Notes on coolant | ||
9 | Detach engine oil cooler on air ducting and secure against falling down outside the working area | Engine 157
10 | Unclip air ducting on radiator support (3) and remove downwards
11 | Unclip Active-Body-Control cooler (1) on radiator support (3) and fasten on bumper | Vehicles with code (487) Active Body Control (ABC)
12 | Detach coolant hose between coolant pump and cooler (7) and set aside

| |||
14 | Detach coolant hose between charge air cooler and cooler for the low-temperature water circuit (5) | Engines 157, 278
| |||
15 | Detach transmission fluid lines to transmission cooler (4) | Seal openings using stop plugs.
| |||
16 | Detach refrigerant lines on A/C condenser (2) | Seal openings using stop plugs.
| |||
| |||
| |||
17 | Lower vehicle | ||
18 | Remove coolant hose between cooler (7) and coolant thermostat
19 | Remove coolant hose between cooler (7) and coolant expansion reservoir on cooler (7)
20 | Take out radiator (7) in an upward direction | Check rubber mount (8) for the cooler package and replace if necessary.
Installation: Check for correct seating of cooler package in the rubber mounts (8) and the lower cooler holder.
21 | Remove bolt (2a) on the cooler (7), unclip condenser for the A/C (2) from radiator support (3) and take off | When replacing the radiator support (3) or condenser for the A/C (2)
22 | Push together retaining clamp and remove cooler (7) from the radiator support (3) | When replacing the cooler (7), radiator support (3), transmission cooler (4) or cooler for the low-temperature water circuit (5)
23 | Detach retaining strips (6) from radiator support (3) | When replacing the radiator support (3), transmission cooler (4) or cooler for the low-temperature water circuit (5)
24 | Unclip transmission cooler (4) from radiator support (3) and remove | Engines 157, 278
When replacing the radiator support (3) or transmission cooler (4)
25 | Unclip cooler for low-temperature water circuit (5) from radiator support (3) and remove | Engines 157, 278
When replacing the radiator support (3) or cooler for the low-temperature water circuit (5)
26 | Install in the reverse order
27 | Check oil level in transmission and correct if necessary | Vehicles without 4MATIC
Vehicles with 4MATIC | |||
Danger! | Risk of accident caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running | Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
28 | Perform an engine test run and check cooling system for function and leaktightness |
