Remove/install

Drain coolant at radiator

Remove engine cover

Remove engine air intake duct upstream of air filter

Release and disconnect electrical connection (1) on coolant thermostat heating element (R48)

 The coolant thermostat heating element (R48) must not be removed from the thermostat housing (2).

Disconnect electrical connection on coolant temperature sensor (B11/4)

Open fastening clip (10) and detach vacuum lines on bracket

Detach coolant hoses (3) from thermostat housing (2)

Remove screw/bolt (4)

Unclip engine wiring harness (5) and place upwards to one side

Detach coolant hose (6) at thermostat housing (2)

 Hose clamp pliers

Remove screws/bolts (7)

 Installation: Mount bracket (8) on upper screw/bolt (7).

 Bolt, thermostat to cylinder head/coolant pump

Remove screw/bolt (9) and remove thermostat housing (2)

 Installation: Mount glow plug electrical connection (X214) with bracket at screw/bolt (9).

 Bolt, thermostat to cylinder head/coolant pump

Install in the reverse order

Pour in coolant

 Metric screws/bolts and nuts as per MBN 10 105, 10 143
