 	Remove/install
1	Remove cylinder head cover.		AR01.20-P-5014MRM
		 Installation: Only install upper engine cover and lower engine compartment paneling after the performing a leak test.
2	Remove charge-air distributor from cylinder head (1) and fasten outside of working area.		AR09.41-P-8683MRM
3	Remove exhaust gas turbocharger with exhaust manifold.		AR09.40-P-6036MRM
4	Remove camshafts.		AR05.20-P-6992MRK
5	Remove camshaft bearing bridges from cylinder head (1).
6	Remove bolt (2) and place coolant line (3) to one side.	 Screw, coolant line to coolant pipe/cylinder head/crankcase/coolant thermostat/coolant hose/timing case	*BA20.10-P-1008-01AC
7	Release and disconnect electrical connector (4) of coolant temperature sensor (B11/4).
8	Remove screws (9).	 Screw, coolant line to coolant pipe/cylinder head/crankcase/coolant thermostat/coolant hose/timing case	*BA20.10-P-1008-01AC
9	Remove bolts (10) and place bracket (11) with boost pressure regulator (Y77/1) to one side.	 Screw, boost pressure control pressure transducer holder to cylinder head/timing case cover	*BA09.40-P-1017-01U
10	Remove spark plugs.

11	Remove caps (12).	 Installation: Replace caps (12).
12	Remove bearing pins (13).

		 Installation: Wet bearing pins (13) with engine oil.

13	Release cylinder head bolts in stages in reverse order to tightening procedure and remove.	Tightening procedure	AR01.30-P-5800-01MR

		 Only loosen cylinder head bolts after engine has cooled off completely. The cylinder head (1) will otherwise be damaged.
		 Installation: Replace cylinder head bolts. Pay attention to tightening procedure of the cylinder head bolts.

14	Remove cylinder head (1).
15	Remove cylinder head gasket.	 Installation: Fit a new cylinder head gasket on the crankcase. Pay attention to the pilot bushing for fixing the cylinder head (1) in place.
16	Remove hydraulic valve play compensation elements.	When replacing the cylinder head (1).

17	Remove coolant temperature sensor (B11/4).	When replacing the cylinder head (1).

18	Remove valves.	When replacing the cylinder head (1).

	Clean
19	Clean sealing surfaces of cylinder head (1), timing case cover and crankcase.		AR01.00-P-0050-01A
		 Do not use any sharp-edged tools or abrasive paper. Sealing surfaces will otherwise be damaged.

		Loctite 7063 (400 ml) cleaning spray	*BR00.45-Z-1046-04A
20	Cover threaded holes of cylinder head bolts in crankcase with rags and blow out with compressed air.
	Check
21	Check sealing surfaces of cylinder head (1), timing case cover and crankcase for cracks and unevennesses.	 Do not rework cylinder head (1) and crankcase (surface grinding). The permissible production tolerances will otherwise be exceeded.
		 The tightening of the cylinder head bolts offsets a slight distortion of cylinder head (1) in the longitudinal or transverse direction.
		If there is a problem:
		
		Replace cylinder head (1), timing case cover and/or crankcase.
		Remove/install timing case cover	AR01.40-P-8000MRM
22	Check valves, valve seats and valve guides for damage and wear.	Where removed cylinder head (1) will be reused.

		If there is a problem:
		
		Replace cylinder head (1) and/or valves.
		Remove/install valves	AR05.30-P-3511MRK
23	Install in the reverse order.
24	Change engine oil and oil filter element.

 Warning	Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running.	Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. 25	Perform engine test run. While doing so, check engine for proper operation and leak tightness.
