General function
The instrument cluster notifies the driver of all dynamic and static driving conditions as well as about the current condition of the systems installed in the vehicle. In the event of faulty vehicle functions or functions relevant to safety, corresponding warnings are issued via the instrument cluster.
To convey the information to the driver the instrument cluster is equipped with the following displays:
Permanent displays (e. g. speed, power availability display, charge level of high-voltage batteries in %)
Indicator lamps (green, yellow or blue) (e.g. turn signals, high beams)
Warning lamps (red) (e.g. high-voltage battery warning, regenerative brake system fault)
Multifunction display (e.g. status displays, odometer, menu sequence)
The instrument cluster has three indicators:
Speedometer on the left side
Power consumption and charging display on the right side
Multifunction display in the center
The default position of the pointer in the power consumption and charging display after system start is the "0" between "Charge" and "Economy".
The power consumption and charging display is split between "Charge", "Economy" and "Boost".
"Charge":
Recuperation energy is shown in the "Charge area". The further that the pointer moves to the left, the more energy that has been gained back.
"Economy"/"Boost":
Energy is drawn off of the high-voltage batteries in the "Economy" or "Boost" ranges. The further that the pointer moves to the right, the more energy that is being consumed.
Information can be called up in the multifunction display using the buttons on the instrument cluster, e.g.:
Present consumption in kWh/100 km using a bar graph
Composite mileage in kWh/100 km
Maximum charging current limit in amps

Operation
Indicator and warning lamp test
Control and warning messages
Display operating states.
Comfort displays
Trip computer
Activate instrument cluster (IC) control unit
The multifunction display of the instrument cluster is activated by waking up the suspension CAN or interior CAN, e.g. by:
Unlocking the vehicle through radio frequency
Driver door opened
Changing the status of circuit 15
After bus idle, the instrument cluster (IC) control unit remains active for t = 30 s. If there is a fault, this time is extended to t = 120 s.
The electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit sends the terminal status of circuit 15 over the chassis CAN to the instrument cluster (IC) control unit.
Operation
The menu button (A1/1s2) and the reset button (A1/1s1) on the instrument cluster are used to select a menu.
Using the button "Instrument, switch and controls illumination, bright" (A1/1s3) and the button "Instrument, switch and controls illumination, dark" (A1/1s4), the menu is changed.
All functions are arranged in a list. Using the menu button (press briefly), you can scroll forward through the list. You can jump back with a long press.
Indicator and warning lamp test
The indicator and warning lamp test is run automatically each time circuit 15 is switched on.
For this, all indicator and warning lamps, except the indicator lamps for the exterior lighting and turn signal light, are actuated.
The electronic ignition lock (EIS) control unit sends the terminal status of circuit 15 over the chassis CAN to the instrument cluster (IC) control unit.
The indicator lamp tests end once the vehicle is started.
Control and warning messages
The instrument cluster informs the driver about the functionality and status of the installed vehicle systems.
Safety-relevant system activities or system malfunctions are shown to the driver in the form of control and warning messages in the instrument cluster.
The following display options are provided for this purpose:
Indicator lamps (green, yellow or blue)
Warning lamps (red)
Multifunction display (text/graphic displays)
The instrument cluster (IC) control unit is connected to the on-board electronics via the suspension CAN (CAN E) and interior CAN (CAN B).
Requests to output indicator and warning messages from control units which are connected to one of the following CANs are transmitted to the instrument cluster (IC) control unit:
Interior CAN
Chassis CAN
The powertrain control unit transmits requests for control units that are connected to one of the following CANs to output control and warning messages to the instrument cluster (IC) control unit via the suspension CAN:
Electric drive CAN (CAN ED)
Hybrid CAN (CAN L)
The electronic ignition lock control unit (EZS) transmits requests for control units connected to the front-end CAN (CAN G) to output control and warning messages to the instrument cluster (IC) control unit via the suspension CAN.
Display operating conditions, general
The operating conditions display provides the driver with permanent information about the current operating conditions of the vehicle.
The "display operating conditions" function comprises the following subfunctions:
Display of vehicle speed
Display of output
Display of available output
Display of travel distance
Display of charge level
Display of drive range and recuperation level
Display of drive programs
Display of vehicle speed
The vehicle speed is calculated on the basis of the wheel speeds.
The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) control unit (N30/4) calculates the vehicle speed from the wheel speeds and transmits the calculated vehicle speed to the instrument cluster (IC) control unit via the suspension CAN.
The instrument cluster (IC) control unit compares this with the internally stored speedometer characteristic and actuates the speedometer (A1/1p8) accordingly via a stepper motor.
Display of output
The currently required power is displayed via the power consumption and charging display (A1/1p19).
The powertrain control unit (N127) receives information from the accelerator pedal module (B37/4) about the position of the accelerator pedal and from this calculates the currently required power. The information is forwarded to the instrument cluster (IC) control unit via the suspension CAN and displayed in the power consumption and charging display.
Display of available output
The three displayed bars at the top right in the multifunction display (segment steps: 1 to 3 bars) represent the current available output from the high-voltage batteries for the entire vehicle. With three bars, the vehicle can be heated, air-conditioned and accelerated at full power. If only one bar is displayed, only a reduced output is therefore available for the consumers. In normal operation, full output provision can be expected.
The following cases are exceptions in which the available output can be impaired:
Low charge level of high-voltage batteries (message is displayed in the instrument cluster)
Component part protection (example: torque limitation due to high temperature)
High voltage part failure
Extreme outside temperatures
Display of travel distance
The instrument cluster (IC) control unit uses the wheel speeds to calculate the traveled distance, taking the tire circumference into consideration.
The tire size is coded via the vehicle diagnosis system.
The total distance is displayed in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster. The maximum displayed counter reading of the main odometer reading is 9.999.999. It then changes back to "0". However, the actual kilometer reading is still counted and stored continually in the instrument cluster (IC) control unit's non-volatile memory. This memory ensures that the counter reading is retained for at least 5 years even when the on-board electrical system battery (G1) is disconnected.
The trip distance is displayed in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster. The maximum displayed counter reading of the trip distance is 9999.9. If this value is reached, the figure returns to "0". The current trip distance is also stored in the nonvolatile memory of the instrument cluster (IC) control unit.
Display of charge level
The high-voltage battery charging is displayed via the charge level display in the multifunction display.
Information on the charge level of the high-voltage batteries is supplied by the battery management system control unit (N82/2) on the hybrid CAN (CAN L). The powertrain control unit forwards this information to the instrument cluster (IC) control unit via the suspension CAN (CAN E).
Display of drive range and recuperation level
Drive range and recuperation information is shown in the drive range/recuperation level display in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster.
The drive range is selected by the selector lever and the recuperation level is selected by the gearshift paddles on the steering wheel.
Further information is available in the separate function description "Recuperation function".
Display of drive programs
The selected drive program (selected using the drive program button (N72/1s6) in the center console) is displayed at the bottom right in the drive program display in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster.
Further information can be found in the separate function description "Electric vehicle function".
Comfort displays in general
The comfort displays provide a quick overview of the following information:
Display of outside temperature
Display of time
Instrument cluster scale illumination
Display of outside temperature
The outside temperature is detected by the outside temperature sensor (B14).
The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit directly reads in signals from the outside temperature sensors, calculates the outside temperature and transmits this to the instrument cluster (IC) control unit via the suspension CAN. The outside temperature is displayed in the multifunction display in °C or °F to match the country specification.
In order to be able to show the actual outside temperature, the following parameters must also be considered:
Vehicle speed (falsification of value through air stream)
If the vehicle is stationary, the measured temperature can differ considerably from the outside temperature. The outside temperature is therefore only included in the closed-loop control if the vehicle speed is greater than or equal to 30 km/h for a period of at least 30 seconds. At speeds lower than 30 km/h and when the ignition is being switched on and off, the last measured temperature value is used.
Display of time
The time is displayed in the digital clock in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster.
The time always synchronizes itself to the radio (Audio) (N87/2). The radio (Audio) receives GPS signals (GPS: Global Positioning System), evaluates these and transmits information regarding the time to the instrument cluster (IC) control unit via the interior CAN.
Instrument cluster scale illumination
The scale illumination is switched on when the instrument cluster (IC) control unit is activated. The brightness is automatically adapted to the ambient brightness (day/night) by the instrument cluster (IC) control unit.
In darkness, the brightness can also be adjusted by pressing the following buttons on the instrument cluster:
Instrument, switch and controls illumination button, bright (A1/1s3)
Instrument, switch and controls illumination button, dark (A1/1s4)
The instrument cluster (IC) control unit controls the brightness of all display elements accordingly.
Trip computer function, general
The trip computer offers data and information regarding energy consumption after reset, average energy consumption, present consumption, distance and remaining range.
The trip computer provides the following display screens:
"After start" (short-distance memory)
"After reset" (long-distance memory)
The information displayed refers to the point in time of the last reset of the short-distance memory ("After start") or of the long-distance memory ("After reset").
The "After start" or "After reset" information is shown on the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster as follows:
Distance traveled
Present consumption
Average energy consumption
The trip computer function includes the following partial functions:
Display of distance after start/reset
Display of present consumption and average consumption
Display reset.
Display of distance after start/reset
The travel distance is calculated on the basis of the wheel speeds.
The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) control unit (N30/4) transmits information about the wheel speeds to the instrument cluster (IC) control unit via the suspension CAN (CAN E).
The instrument cluster (IC) control unit calculates the traveled distance from the wheel speeds.
The "After start" distance is displayed in a range from 0 to 9,999 km.
The units can be changed in the "Setup" menu in the "Display" submenu. The distance unit can be changed from "km" to "miles" in the "Distance" display window.
The "After reset" travel distance is calculated in the same way as the "After start" travel distance. The "After reset" distance is displayed in a range from 0 to 9,999 km.
Depending on the settings in the instrument cluster (IC) control unit or the coded national version, the distance is displayed in:
Kilometers, (e.g Economic Commission for Europe (ECE), Japan)
Miles, (e.g. USA, Australia)
Display of present consumption and average consumption
The drive train control unit (N127) sends information on energy consumption to the instrument cluster (IC) control unit over the suspension CAN.
The trip computer determines the following information from this data:
Present consumption, composite mileage
Travel distance covered "After start" or "After reset"
Depending on the settings (Kilometers/Miles) and national version coding of the instrument cluster (IC) control unit, energy consumption is displayed in:
kWh/100 km (kilowatt hours per 100 kilometers)
mpkWh (miles per kilowatt hours)
The present consumption is displayed together with the range. The display is shown as a numerical value or in the form of a bar.
Display of remaining range
The estimated remaining range is calculated from the ratio between the current charge level of the high-voltage batteries and the average energy consumption.
Display reset
The trip computer is reset in the "Reset values" menu by pressing the following buttons on the instrument cluster:
Menu button (A1/1s2)
Reset button (A1/1s1)
