 Warning

Risk of injury caused by performing testing or repair work on airbag or emergency tensioning retractor units.

Store airbag units with deployment side facing up; do not expose to temperatures greater than 100 °C. When working on these units, disconnect the power supply.

Removing front seat backrest upholstery

Remove expansion rivets (1) from backrest frame at top and side and fold multicontour backrest retaining plate (3) forward

 Installation: Hook tabs of multicontour backrest retaining plate (3) back into tensioning wire.
Make sure that multicontour backrest retaining plate (3) is seated correctly.

Disconnect electrical connector (5) from driver seat belt tensioner squib (R12/1) or front passenger seat belt tensioner squib (R12/2)

Remove screw (2) securing automatic belt retractor with seat belt tensioner (4) to backrest frame

 Bolt, seat belt retractor to front seat backrest

Remove automatic belt retractor with seat belt tensioner (4) from backrest frame

 Installation: Pay attention to different versions (left and right) of automatic belt retractor with seat belt tensioner (4) and ensure correct seating in catch on backrest frame.

Disconnect electrical connectors (6, 7) from automatic belt retractor with seat belt tensioner (4)

 Warranty no longer applies to seat belt retractors that have been opened.
If the automatic belt retractor with seat belt tensioner (4) is replaced, the defective unit must be disposed of properly and in an environment-friendly manner.

Install in the reverse order

 Seat belts/emergency tensioning retractors
