Turn steering to center position and remove ignition key

 Determine steering wheel turns between left and right full lock. Turn steering wheel from full lock back by half the measured value.

Fold back floor covering (3) in area of steering column tube (1) until the screw (2) is accessible


Carefully fold back floor covering (3),
else this may be damaged by breakage.

Unscrew screw (2) and remove steering column tube (1) from rack-and-pinion steering (19)


The self-locking screw (2)
must be replaced.

Unclip boot (20)

Fold back floor covering (3) at right under instrument panel until electrical connectors (4) are accessible


Carefully fold back floor covering (3),
else this may be damaged by breakage.

Disconnect electrical connectors (4) and guide electric lines (5) through opening in engine compartment

 Installation: Ensure that grommet of electric lines (5) is correctly seated in firewall.

Remove front wheels

Remove tie rod ends from steering knuckles

Remove rubber mounts (6) from front axle carrier (7)

Unscrew screws/bolts (8) and remove bracket (9)

Position removal fixture (10) with transmission jack under front axle carrier (7)

Secure front axle carrier (7) with belt (11) of removal fixture (10)

Unscrew screws (12) and screws (arrows)

 Bolt, front-axle carrier to body

Lower removal fixture (10) with front axle carrier (7) until the rack-and-pinion steering (19) is accessible

 Note electric lines (5).

 Installation: Ensure that boot (20) is correctly seated in firewall.

Remove electric lines (5) from front axle carrier (7)

Unscrew screws (14) and remove clamp (15)

Unscrew nut (17) and take off holder (18)

Remove rack-and-pinion steering (19) from front axle carrier (7)


The center position of the rack-and-pinion steering (19) must not be changed.
Otherwise the fanfare horns and airbag clock spring contact may be damaged.

Remove boot (20) from rack-and-pinion steering (19)

When replacing rack-and-pinion steering (19).

Install in the reverse order

Perform wheel alignment check
