 Warning

Risk of injury caused by performing testing or repair work on airbag or emergency tensioning retractor units.

Store airbag units with deployment side facing up; do not expose to temperatures greater than 100 °C. When working on these units, disconnect the power supply.

Disconnect battery ground line

Disconnect connector coupling on driver's airbag squib (R12/3)


Do not damage the catch tabs,
otherwise the plug no longer locks.

 Installation: Ensure that the electrical connector engages.

Move front wheels to straight-ahead position

Unscrew screw as far as end stop using socket wrench socket (2)

 Bolt, steering wheel to steering shaft

Detach steering wheel (1) from steering column

 Replace steering wheel (1) on vehicles up to manufacturing date 02.01.2003

 If the steering wheel (1) is replaced, a version with an attached contact unit housing is delivered as a replacement part.
The housing does not contain a steering angle sensor, but does have two slots for connector plugs. Only connect plugs for airbag/horn contact.
See Fig. A.

 Repair work on the steering wheel (1) and airbag is not permitted and, for this reason, generally replace the steering wheel (1).
If the steering wheel (1) is removed, do not screw in screw and do not twist clock spring contact.

 Installation: Insert steering wheel (1) so that the locking pins line up with the supports of the clock spring contact (arrows).
Ensure that front wheels are in straight-ahead position before installing steering wheel (1).
Turn steering wheel (1) in installed condition and only with tightened screw so as to prevent damage to the clock spring contact.
